GOe-Gastronomy Open Ecosystem Launches GIC Tokyo, First Hub in Its International Network

Published on November 12, 2024

In Tokyo, the inaugural hub of the GOe-Gastronomy Open Ecosystem's new global network was unveiled. Named GIC Tokyo, this first Gastronomy Innovation Campus within the GOe Global Network aims to drive the next generation of advancements in food innovation, transforming the future of the sector. Developed in partnership with Tokyo Tatemono, GIC Tokyo will offer comprehensive educational programs in both Japanese and English, integrating a holistic approach to gastronomy that promotes local culture and expands Japanese culinary heritage globally.

The GOe–Gastronomy Open Ecosystem's core mission is to create collaborative spaces where gastronomy can be explored from a 360º perspective. GIC Tokyo embodies this vision, drawing inspiration from Basque Culinary Center's philosophy of "learning by doing." As an international center, GIC Tokyo will serve as an innovative space for collaboration among chefs, entrepreneurs, and innovators, setting the stage for the future of food in Japan.

Faculty from the Basque Culinary Center will provide tailored training to businesses, scientists, and chefs at GIC Tokyo. In its first year, the center will also run acceleration programs for Japanese startups, sharing expertise in Gastronomic Sciences and Culinary Arts. Sessions will range from theoretical courses to practical kitchen workshops on topics such as creating unique dining experiences, applying creativity to vegetables, and exploring textures in desserts.

Designed with input from architecture firm BAT, Tokyo Tatemono’s design team, and Basque Culinary Center's operations team, GIC Tokyo includes fully equipped kitchen and workshop spaces, accommodating up to 20 participants for hands-on cooking classes. Beyond training sessions, GIC Tokyo will host knowledge-sharing events, including seminars and talks by national and international experts to blend gastronomy with other scientific disciplines. Additionally, a café-bar will operate within the space, with the full opening scheduled for December 2024.

GIC Tokyo aims to foster innovation and collaboration in the gastronomic sector through several key goals. First, it seeks to attract and nurture multidisciplinary talent through educational programs tailored to chefs, entrepreneurs, scientists, and innovators leading advancements in gastronomy and food technology.

Another objective is to encourage synergies among businesses. GIC Tokyo will facilitate partnerships that result in unique co-created value propositions. Through prototype kitchens and joint initiatives, companies will have a space to experiment and innovate in real-world contexts.

Through the GOe Global Network, GOe-Gastronomy Open Ecosystem is driving the future of food innovation by establishing a global network of dedicated partners. GIC Tokyo stands as a vital node in this network, bringing together chefs, entrepreneurs, scientists, and innovators from around the world to co-create and develop pioneering solutions in gastronomy and food technology.
